In order to get fitter and stronger we need to train. This probably seems pretty obvious (to most of us at least!) but it's important to not just train, but to train well. This means doing things that will benefit us; making sure we get adequate rest and recovery; nourish ourselves well; avoid "junk miles"; and have clear objectives to what we do.
Train smart: race well
That doesn't mean that every session we do has to have a concrete structure, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with just getting out and exercising for the sake of exercising (quite the opposite in fact) but if we really want to see clear progress, then structure and objectives can really aid this process.
